William & James | 4 Months

7:40 AM

For some reason this post never got published, I will blame that on the fact that I was probably getting limited sleep and my brain wasn't functioning, so I'm just going to publish it now!

My sweet boys turned four months last friday on March 4 and I can't believe how quickly this past month went by!  They have changed so much, its amazing.  Before this month they would smile at you and coo a little bit, but this month they have really started to interact trying to hold conversations with you and engaging you.

EAT

Feeding continues to go well for the boys.  They are still being exclusively breastfed, and definitely seem to be getting enough based on the amount of weight they are gaining each month! We are down to 6 feedings during the day: 5 breastfeeds and 1 bottle of breastmilk at night.  They are still waking anywhere from 1-3 times through out the night to feed.  Their night time bottle was 5oz at the beginning of the month and by the end of the month was 7oz.  They are little piggies at night and will down their bottles in about 15 minutes.   They are becoming more active while nursing and have started sticking their hands into each others faces (I think this could become a problem as they continue to get bigger and stronger and start annoying each other)  They will also grab onto my shirt or hair.

SLEEP
Sleep has really been hit or miss this month.  We had about a week and a half of terrible sleep at the beginning of the month where Will and James wouldn't sleep more than 1.5-2 hours at a time.  That was a rough week and the first time I was truly exhausted since having them (my eyes were permanently blood shot for a few days just due to lack of sleep)   We have started a new bedtime routine which starts between 7:00-7:15 each night with a bath, we then get dressed in our jammies and head to bed.  We are read two stories the first one changes but the second story is always Goodnight Moon.  After stories it is bottles, while mom sings, and bed by 8:00-8:15.  Most nights the boys are pretty good about putting themselves to sleep possibly needing their paci popped back in their mouths once or twice but after that they are good. They will either sleep until sometime between 1-3 or they might be up around 10-11 to eat you just never know.  They will then again wake sometime between 4:30-6:30.  Since I am trying to teach them to sleep through the night I have stopped waking up the other when one wakes up to eat, this is a good idea in theory and works out most nights except when they wake up about an hour apart so I just finish feeding one and the other wants to start so I am up about 2 hours instead of one.

Development, Growth and Play
I feel like the boys have made grown by leaps and bounds this month!  They are doing great at tummy time and are able to hold their heads up nicely now.  They also have learned how to roll over from tummy to back!  James was first rolling over on february 17 and William was about a week behind rolling over on February 23.  I find it pretty interesting that for most of their milestones Will has been about a week behind James for all of them: smiling, finding his hands, holding up his head and now rolling over.  I will be interested to see if this pattern continues as they get older.

The boys have definitely found their hands this month and have slowly started to use them.  They no longer sit with their hands clenched into fists but are starting to rest with their hands open. They have started holding onto things when you place them right near or in their hands.  They still do not reach out to grab items yet but I think that will be coming.

We have been fitting comfortable into 0-3  and 3 month clothes for most of the month but our onesies and jammies are starting to get a little snug and I think we are going to have to think about moving up to the next size of clothes soon! =( Makes me a little sad my tiny little babies are going so fast!  The boys continue to wear size 1 diapers and those still seem to fit well for now.

When it comes to talking the boys love to carry on a conversation!  They will take turns with you vocalizing back and forth and love watching your mouth as they try to figure out how you are making noises.  They make ooh and aah sounds as well as trying to make a gargling /g/ sound in the back of their throats.

James

My Sweet sweet baby James!  You have grown so much this month and continue to bring so much joy to my life each day.  You found your hands this month and have started to suck your left thumb, even preferring over your paci sometimes.  You have learned to roll over from your tummy to your back this month.  The look on your face when you first did it was surprise followed by excitement at what you had just done.  You quickly rolled over 2 more times when I placed you back on your tummy but after that it took you a day or so to figure out how to do it again.  It was really cute watching you because I could tell you knew that some how you had flipped yourself over but you weren't exactly sure how you had done it.  You continue to be a happy boy giving lots of smiles and coos to mommy and daddy.  Between you and your brother you seem to usually be the better sleeper at night, you sleep for longer stretches waking fewer times.  Nap time is another story you tend to need a little extra attention to get to sleep during nap time and usually wake up before your brother.  James I am beyond blessed to be your mommy and am excited to see what this next month has in store for you!
Love you always!!

William

My handsome William!  You are becoming such a big boy!  The scale says you and your brother are the same size but to me you look bigger.  You learned how to roll over from your tummy to your back this month and were so proud of yourself when you did it!  You were about a week behind your brother doing this but when you did your seemed to really understand how to get onto your back and can pretty much do it whenever you want unless you're too tired.  You have found your hands and seem to enjoy sucking/chewing on the fingers on your right hand, no thumb sucking for you.  You love having conversations with mommy, you will take turns with me telling all about your day and what you think about an activity we're doing.  This month you really don't like it when mommy leaves the room and you let me know it.  Most of the time you are all smiles again when I enter the room!  I love your sweet personality and all the beautiful smiles you give me, I am one lucky mommy to get to call you my son!
Love you always!!
